About Air Filter in Questions
air filter? i have an 88 Trans Am GTA 5.7 LT1 engine and i was wondering if anyone knew where/how i could get a K&N air filter or something that resembles that type of filter, i dont want just the filter itself, im talking about the whole kit,

Silverstang replied: "Check Summit, or Jegs, or even any performance car parts store that'd sell them. Good luck."

dodge man replied: "you might check with K&N,s web site ,they may have something like your wanting for it,add the .com to k&n ,and it should take you strait to their main web site, and they should have a system to fit that car, good luck with it hope this helps."

Satnam S replied: "Go to K&N's website and put in the parameters for your car, they should have what your looking for and even provide you with the closest retailer. You could also check with Pontiac Dealerships, as some of the larger dealers will add aftermarket parts to their cars to get more money. Check with the service manager."

Cleo B replied: "Go to autozone, they can order it. Or search ebay, thats where I got my K&N Charger for my Toyota."

What is a makeup air filter inside the normal air filter that I am supposed to replace? I drive an '04 Dodge SRT-4. In the manual under maintenance schedules it says both to replace the engine air cleaner filter and it also says to "Inspect and replace, if required, the the make-up air filter (located inside the air cleaner)" What is the Make-up air filter? I replaced the main air filter and looked inside of it but there was no other filter inside of it.

Lance replied: "Make up air refers to extra air the engine needs under high demand situations. The M.A. supply vent only opens when the throttle is nearly wide open, the normal air intake under these circumstances can't supply the required C.F.M.'s. It is usually an extra supplied with high performance models or can be purchased "after market". Your vehicle apparently is not so equipped."

ucantcme replied: "YOUR VEHICLE IS NOT EQUIP WITH THIS TYPE OF AIR FILTER."

What is the best air filter that you can buy? I'm having to change my air filter every 2 or 3 weeks. My townhome is about 1200 square feet, but I don't understand why I have to change the filters so often. I have tried the air filters that are about $20 for one, and the cheaper ones that are $15 for 3. The $20 filter lasted about a week longer than the others, but for the cost it doesn't really add up. Home depot sells an air filter that costs $100, and it's suppose to be for 30 years or something. Anyway, what's the best air filter that I can buy?

Dave replied: "My personal experience with Home Depot is that they sell the cheapest junk they can get their hands on. Their sales personnel usually know about 20% of what they should know about their job and products. They have misled me and given me outright false information in the past. Stay away from them. I assume you mean a furnace or air conditioning unit air filter. A filter is supposed to pull dirt and dust out of the air. If it gets clogged every few weeks, that does not have nearly as much to do with the cost / quality of the filter as it does the amount of dirt / dust in your air. It seems to me you have a lot. Check your ducts for dirt and dust. Sometimes during construction a lot of dirt and debris gets into the ducts. The ducts need to be clean. Also, check the area where the equipment is for sources of dirt. For example, if your furnace room has a door to the outside, and there is a louver in the door, you could be getting a lot of dust from outside. A lot of townhomes have a crawlspace, and the furnace is in the crawlspace. Sometimes these crawlspaces have a dirt floor - and that is a source of dirt and dust to clog the best of filters. If you have this condition, cover the dirt floor with minimum 6 mil thick plastic from wall to wall. Seal all the seams/overlaps with tape. That should help. If your doors and windows are always open, that is a source of dust. Maybe you just need to vacuum more often. Remember, if a filter is getting clogged, it is because it is removing a lot of dust, not because it is a cheap filter. Look for the source of the dirt/dust."

fidel410 replied: "In the past 7 years I have never seen a $100.00 filter at the HD. But to answer you question on the effectiveness on the filters, which by the way should be changes every 90 days, the spun fiber glass is the cheapest and worst filter you can buy. One way to see for yourself is to take baby powder and sprinkle it over the filter, just about all the powder fall through. With the 3 for $15.00, naturalaire filters, they fare better in stopping the talc powder. The best would be the 3M Electrostatic filters. Take a look at the MERV rating on your filters when you buy them. If you are asthmatic or have severe allergies, I would recommend the 3M filters, otherwise the Naturalaire filters work just fine. By the way I use the naturalaire. Edit: An air filter is just that, it filters out particulates in the air when the A/C or Heater is run, thus clearing out any particulates in the air. An air purification system does the same thing without heating or cooling and is more efficient in cleaning the air. It is something i would recommend only if the buyer is a smoker, has allergies or respiratory ailments."

ric_ozz replied: "Most people are confused about he purpose of the "Air Filter". It is not to clean the air but to filter out larger dirt particles to protect the furnace/ evaporator coil. If you are looking to clean the air then invest in an electric air cleaner. these run about $1000. The more restrictive filter you use the less efficient your system is."

What's a good air conditioning filter to reduce indoor allergens? Our house seems to have a lot of dust and carpet fibers in the air, even though it's only three years old. What's a good air filter to use to reduce dust and also pet allergens in the air? Thank you!

R.N. replied: "Filtrete Ultra Allergen Air Filters"

Einstein_Newton replied: "I was going to ask the same question!! Lucking me: I came across this website, which I'm reading right now: Important Note: AIr filter purpose was to protect the air conditioner units, so watch what you put inside you air filter slot. A friend of mine, damage his air conditioner by putting wrong filter. Good luck find the right filter."

How to protect an open air filter against water? Hello together, I have an open air filter from K&N with a strange intake. Anyway, the "problem" is, the filter is right behind the wheels. So it's very easy to get it wet throw rain or wet streets… Is there something I can buy to protect the filer? I heard about something which protects filters against water, but I don't know what.

Joe C replied: "K&N makes a pre-filter which is kind of like a wrap you slip over the filter. I believe Summit Racing sells them."

SS<3 replied: "What about some type of air box, or shield..."

Satan replied: "They sell a valve that fits further back on the intake tube. It's just a foam diamond shaped segment and it acts as a bypass, should water actually get past the filter."

What is the Best AIR Filter material for short ram intake systems? I've heard of cotton and other material and materials. Just wanted to know thats all. p.s. I've heard about 3" Universal Carbon Fiber Heat Shield Air Intake Filter. Is this any good and the best filter?

Vipassana replied: "No. You're just paying for the glamor of having carbon fiber, you're not getting any serious gains or benefits from it. It's been proven many many times. All the intakes like to advertise different benefits, but the difference between them is only about .5 horsepower. Not enough to even register, really. Nevermind that an intake itself, will only net you about 2-3 usable horsepower, and on many cars, actually causes a loss of power. So, ask yourself if the cost of it is worth that."

Can you clean a dirty air filter? The filter in my air conditioning/heating unit (in my apartment) is extremely dirty. Maintenance is supposed to come and change them once a month, but I guess they haven't gotten around to it this month. I plan on getting a new one soon, but I'm wondering - is it possible to clean them somehow, until I get a new one? I've noticed that since it has been dirty, the system is much louder (running the heat OR the a/c). Could this be due to the dirty filter, or may there be something else wrong with the system?

shadowdancr17 replied: "it could be both. maybe you could use a hand-vac or canned air to clean the filter until you can get a new one. that is what i use on my air machine. hope this helps."

Armando H replied: "Yes you can and it will help with the noise, if there is nothing else wrong with the system. Usually when air filters are dirty the system is stressing and working harder to suck in as much air as its shooting out cause it cant shoot out air if it can't suck it in to cool it down or heat it up. You can use a hose attachment on a vacume cleaner just be very careful and gentle the filters are easy to damage if there the cheap kind. If your vacum cleaner has a setting for low, use it. Another option is to clan off all the big stuff off the filter then use a can of air, ususally sold at computer stores or walmart in the electronics dept by their computer stuff, and blow all the dust off from both sides. You can also get old fashoined and gently bang it on the floor outside. that method is way easier to damage the filter. But as long as you get the big accumulation of dust off the filter will allow air to flow through and cause less stress on your a/c."

CARL S replied: "if the filter is made of fiberglass or other synthetic material it can be washed. if pleated paper ,no. by all means get it done soon. aclogged filter is putting a strain on the fan mator."

functionalanarchist replied: "Air filters for forced air systems run between $.99 and $5.00. The high dollar one is a "lifetime" model and can be washed and cleaned. Buying two lets you store one clean one and just swap out once a month, cleaning the dirty one and storing it till the next exchange. While the noise can be a comfort issue, the restriction that a dirty filter places on your system equals higher energy bills and reduced comfort as the system trys to move enough air to reach your farthest registers."

Dave replied: "Yes, you can clean it. You can gently vacuum it in place if you have a vacuum cleaner with a hose, ot take it outside and blow it off with a can of compressed air. Don't blow it off in the house because you will be spraying your dust all over the house. And I wouldn't buy compressed air or anything else at all from Walmart. And yes, a clogged filter will cause the unit to work harder and make more noise."

How do change an air filter element on an 1974 850cc Norton? The air filter front plate on this bike has some curious plumbing on the inside which does not allow it to slide away from the air filter. They must be removed as one. The bike is original. Replacing is a nightmare because the air hoses must be seated. I have run out of patience! Some one know.

geo46er replied: "I own a 74 850, although, as soon as I bought it I changed it to a K&N dual inlet airfilter, and since have converted to a single Amal carb with a foam sock type filter. However, I did install the stock unit once. I believe most of the difficulty is because the rubber air tubes get stiff with age (just like me). Pull the rubber tubes from the front plate and assemble the airbox. Boil a pan of water and throw the air tubes in for a few minutes this will make them soft and pliable for a short time so you have to work quickly to get them in. I think thats how I did it, but, I must admit its been a number of years. If you get stuck post your question again on the forum at bookmark that site it is a wealth of info read and contributed to on a daily basis by a number of highly experienced Norton enthusiasts. Wanna talk Norton drop me a note"

Installing a Cone air filter on a stock intake tube? I am planning to install a cone air filter (those found in autozone) in the place of a stock air box of the air intake. But i am planning to keep the original rubber tube. Is that possible? I know it will not give as many hp as the CAI... Will there be any problems such as check engine light turning on? Any help is appreciated... By the way the car is a 95 maxima.

Country Boy replied: "Are you open for a better idea? Replace the air filter inside your present (COLD) air- box With a K&N. Forget the cone filter because you'll forever be drawing underhood hot air. There's more oxygen (wich turns into power) in cold air than stale old hot air."

What is the best way to clean an air intake filter without using oil? I have a '02 F-150 and I put an aftermarket air intake system on it, Fram Boost. The company says that the air filter doesn't need to be replaced but instead just cleaned without the use of oil. What is the best way to go about this?

Rustin replied: "Use an air compressor to blow out the dirt for the filter. And vaccuum out your intake box or spray with electronic cleaner and wipe off."

M R replied: "Clean with soapy water. Blow dry with compressed air."
