What is the best way to get more power out of a 454 big block? I have a 1973 Monte Carlo with a original 454 big block and want more power. I am looking for suggestions on the best way to do so. I absolutly love this big block, the car is massive and can cruse but get i can still smoke quite a bite of cars in races. But need more power!!

crownvicp71 replied: "bore it out,and put bigger pistons and bigger crankshaft in it"

soyoulikenovas replied: "how do you pay for gas. well a small one could be cam, msd better starting and more power. well just go here and look up performance "

ISSRShiloh replied: "Put new exhaust, rework the heads, rebuild the motor with more compression, new intakes..just depends on how much money you want to spend."

jim d replied: "change intake manifold - bigger carb - hotter plugs -different cam- nitrus-other than that things could get expensive"

willie replied: "cam and intake with exhaust will give you a good bang for your buck"

camyfamy replied: "presurize your pistons by 1.07 not to exceed 1.09, then add 2 gallons of nitrous in your trunk, you will be blown away how much power you will get, presurizing the pistons will help you not to blow the engine, if you wont presurize them there is a 95%possability that you will blow your engine after 4seconds running nitrous, if you really want to know how much power you will get well i can tell you at least 220HP no jokes, tried it on my 06 chevy suburban k2500 8.1L v8 big block, dont use too much nitrous while flying faster then an aeroplane since its really hard to see the road while using it "dangerous toy""

vtx.1800retro replied: "11 compression pistons, ram jet fuel injection, hooker headers, 560 lift cam with about 320 duration, port and polish the heads,8 qt oil pan, milodon high volume pump, msd ignition, that should get you aroung 550 to 600 h.p and still be reliable, don't forget to have it balanced also."

Knucklesā„¢ replied: "Stroke it!"

454 big block and where would be the best place to get the block itself? im looking to rebuild a 454 and i need the best option for finding the bare minimum just the block to start off of it doesnt have to be brand new but it can be. im going to rebuild the whole thing just some ideas or websites numbers of places would be nice thank you.

Scott replied: "Do you want a new one or do you want a used one? I know you can get one out of a 1992 chevrolet 454ss. or an older chevelle. but other than that google crate engines. or just contact your local junkyard. 454's are common in large gas powered box trucks or like 4500s 3500s any decntly large chevy vehicle will have one in it. 454s are also pretty reliable so if you find one dont rip it apart because its probably in running condition."

L.N. replied: "454's are common in trucks, but be aware that the heavy duty truck block is different than the passenger car or light truck blocks. The block deck height is .400 taller and it uses different intake, pistons and distributor. If you are looking at having to purchase a block I think a new crate engine makes more sense. "

wildmanny2 replied: "Find a used one here "

whats the best supercharger for a big block 454 motor? im planning on putting this motor in a vehicle that is going to be set up for drag racing. im curious about which would be the best.

Chris C replied: "Wow, i am guessing you are just getting in to racing. this is not the forum to be asking that question. there are enough tards on here that will be giving you answer that have absolutely no clue as to what they are saying. i would recommend finding some books on racing motors do some research. cause if you are drag racing compeditively you will be rebuilding the motor and supercharger a couple of times on the weekend. i would tell you to talk to other teams out there but it is a competitive field and NO one will give up thier secrets willing ly. hope this helps chris"

How hard would it be to switch a chevy 283 engine to a big block 454 chevy? hi i have a 1963 impala 4 door and i have a little Chevy 283 with a powerglide transmission... how hard would it be to convert to a 454 Big block engine with a 400 turbo transmission

mike v replied: "i believe the engine mounts should match the big block.also the bell housing. the problem being , to upgrade the drive line to match the added power you would have. you would also have to upgrade the cooling system."

Dan W replied: "The 409 fit right in, a 454 should fit but there may be interference at the firewall/heater box. The usual fix is the biggest hammer available."

Life is good replied: "A 350 would be a better choice. That 454 is one heavy SOB and you are going to require some serious upgrade to handle the weight and the power. New cooling system front springs drive-shaft and rear axle Brakes - min req - front disc conversion Or simply do what we did. 1965 Chevy p/up. We upgraded to a 283 for bit more power and dropped that in. We also upgraded the entire drive-line, suspension and brakes too. Not really required but it sure rides nice."

richard b replied: "you will have to relocate your motor mounts, and depending on the length of the tranny, you may have to have another drive shaft. also, you will need to get some larger springs up front, you know big block springs. but clearance shouldnt be a problem you should have plenty of room under the hood"

mikeistheman1979 replied: "the motor mounts are the same and it will work with the 400 easy, but you will need a heavy duty radiator"

12pleze replied: "It would match up but you will have many, many other changes first."

chevyraceman_383 replied: "Pretty simple swap. You may need to switch to BB mounts due to the height of the SB mounts. The SB mounts sits about 3/8" higher up than BB so your 454 might not have the hood clearance depending on what air cleaner you run. Don't listen to these nut jobs that says you need a diff rear end o axles. Same rear was used in all the impala's, so the BB, SB and straight 6 cars all had same one and its plenty strong enough for a 454. Now on the front springs. You can run the stock springs but the weight of the BB will lower front end by about an inch. Or swap to BB springs to have it sitting at stock ride height Now if you do the powerglide to th-400 swap you will need to move the transmission crossmember back 6-7 inchs and maybe drill new holes in frame to bolt it up, and you will need to get a diff driveshaft Theres 2 versions of each trans, so I aint sure what you have but here are the lenghts Powerglide short tail 24-1/4" overall Powerglide long tail 27-1/2" overall Th-400 short tail 28-1/4" overall Th-400 long tail 34" overall Now not sure if you know but the powerglide you have will bolt up to the 454 w/o any probs You'll need exhaust manifolds or headers to fit the BB engine, nd may have to tweak your exhaust some to fit up to those BB manifolds. Cooling system depends on if you have the light duty 2 core rad or the HD 3 or 4 core rad. All of the wires hooks up about the same You will need big block pulleys and acc. brackets though."

Best chevy 454 block? I'm researching an engine combo for my 72 Chevelle. I understand any year 454 engine will work. what 454 is best. early or late model. what year did they begin using factory hyd roller?

Jackson replied: "honestly the best 454 production block made is the marine blocks for boats.. they are hot commodities for engine builders due to the higher tin and nickel content and the rollers i'm really not sure on good luck"

AsYLum dRiVeR replied: "Factory rollers most likely came out in the late 80s 454SS trucks. At least that is when the small blocks changed over. GM performance offers some brand new iron blocks for pretty decent prices compared to the general street value of a bb chevy. But you can still find a good bb in the junkyards or on the open market if you are willing to spend some time hunting."

BdB replied: "just get a 454, and drop it in(make sure that if you get an efi motor, that you get the ecu also"

what year did chevy switch to horizontal spark plug holes in big block 454.? I am trying to figure out the age of my big block 454 and know that the horizontal plugs would be able to give the answer if i could find that out.

Spills replied: "I'm not sure if this is the kind of answer you're looking for, but check out this site. If you can get the casting numbers you can search this website and it will tell you alot about what it came off of and alot of other useful info "

Whats the difference between a 454 Big Block, and a 454 Small Block? I am looking to begin searching out and building my dream car. I am not sure if I can fit a 454 Big Block into a 70 chevelle. I can right? If I can, what advantages will the Big Block give me over the small block (454) Any additional information on what you guys think I can do with a 70 chevelle I will gladely accept. I want to make it an awesome power car. I am not interested in it being a sleeper. Thanks In Advance

seaswirl_1 replied: "To the best of my knowledge a 454 small block does not exist. The largest chevy small block produced was a 400cu in. In 1970 I believe the 396 (big Block) was available in the Chevelle. The small block engine is lighter and will make tremendous power if properly put together with the right parts for what you want to do with it. Smaller and lighter makes for better handling and easier on your suspension. Big blocks are just incredible with potential for raw brute power and torque. I would love to get a Chevelle to work on as a project car someday."

turbocivic89 replied: "You can put a 454 big block in your Chevelle......I did on mine. As of now the biggest small block is the LS7 which is a 427 that can pump out 500 hp. The 454 big block will give you alot of torque but not much on the top end/rpm. One thing though, make a list on what you actually want to do to the Chevelle, don't stray away from it because you might end up spending alot of money. Make a plan and stick with it. You will enjoy it at the end."

tweedldee humpledee replied: "I know alot about GM engines and what ci engine sizes come in. I have never heard of a 454 small block. You can definetly fit a 454 into a 70 chevelle in fact some of them came from the factory that way. If I was going for a bigger engine displacement I woud go with a 572 big block gm engine. I think that you should install an electronic exhaust cutout that way when you want to unleash all your horses you would have "open exhaust". Go with a cowl hood, white letter tires like goodyear with sexy SS stripes. Wish you the best luck on your dream car."

mdk68gto replied: "there is a big difference between the two, the big block is a beefy, gas burning power producing work of art, and the small block is... well non existent. i ma sure that you can find kits for any of the obstacles that you may encounter with that project. you may have to beef up the suspension to compensate for the additional weight..."

mister ss replied: "the big block will give you more torque than the small block and thats what you feel in the seat of your pants when you take off, the 454 small block is bored out so far that there is little wall space left between the pistons and thats not good at all, a 454 big block can be bored out to a 502 cu. in. with no problem down the road. The 454 big block will fit in your 70 chevelle with no problem whatsoever."

what tremec tranny should i use for a 454 big block chevy? what tremec transmission would be the best for a 454 chevy big block? i am building a custom chevelle this summer and i was wondering what the best one would be

nicksmom1988 replied: "i have no idea, but i bet its gonna be one hot ride! what year, color is it? i love chevelle's"

mister ss replied: "go with the biggest available as the 454 has a lot of torque and will rip tranny's up."

mdk68gto replied: "a built thm400 or go with the impressive 4l80e."

Shane-iac replied: "Hey Ryan-Great choice for a cruiser. Not much better than a A body car for super street performance. Tremec makes both TKO 5 and 6 series transmissions for your application. Both can take up to 600 ft lbs or torque, so that allows you to mate this trans to a bigger HP BBC. A variety of gear selections, not to mention the possibility of one or two overdrives, would allow you to run a rear gear that wasn't too steep (numerically lower). With the overdrive(s), you could actually pass an occasional gas station. My 496/4:10/4 speed gets 5 MPG and roars at 4000 RPM at 70 MPH. Obviously, I avoid freeways. I think they're only available in 26 spline input, so keep that in mind before you puchase clutch components. Look at spending around $2200 for a new unit. Keep in mind that SHOCK destroys a transmission, not horsepower. Taking the time to research the compatibility of ALL your drive line components will make for a more enjoyable and safer boulevard bruiser. Good luck!"

i have a 1980 chevy 454 block. there are 2 threaded holes at the back of the block just above the oil filter.? "i have a 1980 chevy 454 engine, at the back of the block above the oil filter are 2 threaded holes. what are these for and can i simply plug them?

PARTSMAN replied: "They are oil holes. They are there for pressure check and some had oil switches there. Yes you can plug them. If you don't all your oil will come out there. Some had a hole on the block there for a ball for clutch linkage, if yours has that it will bottom out and does not need to be plugged."

mister ss replied: "those threaded holes are for a linkage set-up for a standard shift tranny."

How much horse power will a 4 bolt main big block chevy 454 handle? I want to build a 9 second bbc motor for my 68 camaro. How much will a stock 96 454 4 bolt block hold. I dont want to buy a dart block if i dont haft to. thanks

Terry D replied: "It depends 250/500 hp But what transmission and rear end do you have. Horse power does not mater if you don't have traction."

Timothy H replied: "Those can boost up to and maybe over 1,000 hp. but that requires some serious coin to invest. The 454 stock is plenty for a 68 Camaro. You have enogh HP to twist the body with just stock parts. Remember that is a uniframe chassis. It only has a partial frame."
